Float featuring in New Zealand Santa Parade called culturally insensitive'
December 03, 2016
Float featuring in New Zealand Santa Parade called culturally insensitive' A Native American float will feature in Christchurch's Santa Parade this weekend, despite a complaint about it. Christchurch residents Michelle and Derek Flores have asked the float be removed from the parade, saying it's culturally insensitive. In an email to the organisers, she said the float which featured "white NZ-European children and adults dressed as First Nations, Native Americans" was highly inappropriate and culturally insensitive. "They have no business being in any public parade, let alone a Santa Parade." She said many people didn't seem to understand how inappropriate it was for white people to dress up in "redface". "If white Americans or Canadians dressed up as Māori people with brown paint on their faces and in traditional Māori dress and had a float in a Santa parade doing…

Swedish Researchers Find Submerged Mesolithic Settlement
December 02, 2016
Swedish Researchers Find Submerged Mesolithic Settlement A team of researchers headed by Lund University’s Professor Dan Hammarlund has uncovered an exceptionally well-preserved Mesolithic site off the Baltic Sea coast at Haväng in south-eastern Sweden. They believe the location was a lagoon environment where ancient humans lived during parts of the year. “The submerged landscape at Haväng is unique, as the excellent preservation of both natural and cultural objects and the longevity of the site are rarely seen in other submerged Mesolithic sites,” Prof. Hammarlund and co-authors said. Changes in the sea level have allowed the findings to be preserved deep below the sea surface. “Organic-rich sediment ridges with abundant wood remains and archaeological artifacts extend 3 km from the modern coast to depths of at least 20 m below the present sea level,”…

Aging White Population Speeding Diversity
December 02, 2016
Aging White Population Speeding Diversity A rapidly aging white population and fast-growing younger minority groups are speeding demographic changes across the nation, hastening a political divide likely to have long-term ramifications.  The percentage of the U.S. population that is white has decreased from 79.6 percent in 1980 to 61.9 percent in 2014. The percentage of Latino-Americans has increased from 6.4 percent to 17.3 percent over the same time period, while both the African-American and Asian-American populations have grown, too. There are growing signs that the rate of change is increasing. The number of non-Hispanic whites who died in 2014 outpaced the number of white births in 17 states, according to a new analysis from the University of New Hampshire. That’s the largest number of states to experience a natural decrease…

'New Era of Peace': Trump Vows To Stop US Toppling of Regimes During 1st Stop of 'Thank You' Tour Donald Trump promised a “new era of peace” during the first stop of his “Thank You” tour in Cincinnati, Ohio, vowing that the US will stop trying to overthrow world governments and will cooperate with countries fighting terrorism. The president-elect also promised to cooperate with any country interested in destroying Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). "We will partner with every nation that is willing to join us in the effort to defeat ISIS and radical Islamic terrorism," Trump told a large crowd at US Bank Arena in Cincinnati on Thursday evening, as quoted by TASS. "We will destroy ISIS. At the same time, we will pursue a new foreign policy that finally learns from the mistakes of the past. We will stop looking to topple regimes and overthrow governments, folks," Trump said, as quoted…

Austria To Ban Migrants From Buying Guns
December 02, 2016
Austria To Ban Migrants From Buying Guns The Austrian government is set to amend the laws which govern the use and possession of firearms so that illegal immigrants and asylum seekers will no longer have access to purchasing them. The new changes to the extant amendment to the Weapons Act, which was approved Thursday by the Internal Committee of the National Council prohibits asylum seekers and migrants living in Austria illegally from access to firearms. The bill, which will take effect in March of next year, also looks to manage the use of arms by security agencies and police, a press release from the government stated. The amendment will not only prohibit illegal migrants and asylum seekers from procuring weapons but also looks to ban legal migrants and accepted refugees until a residency period of five years has passed. Those…
